MORE ABOUT THIEN

Thien Nguyen began his study of karate in the fall of 2001, just weeks from his 7th birthday, at the Richmond Shito-Ryu dojo under Sensei Tony Kim. In 2004, Sensei Tony retired from teaching and Thien continued his karate journey, training in several other styles of karate for the next year or so; all the while, never losing touch with Sempai Kenny Lim. In 2006 when the once Sempai Kenny decided to create West River Karate and become Sensei, Thien was not hesitant to join the West River nation. Sempai Thien was always a strong competitor throughout his karate career, but became so much stronger when he joined the West River Team. He competed as an underbelt for West River Karate under Sensei Kenny Lim for many years. His first major competition was at the 2008 BC Winter Games in Cranbrook. He won 2 gold medals, one for individual kata and the other for team kumite alongside Avneet Matharu, and a bronze medal in individual -45kg kumite. Since then, Sempai Thien has attained his black belt in the summer of 2010, and continues to compete at an elite level. Sempai Thien is currently enrolled as a full-time student at Langara where he is studying recreation programming. He is also working part-time and fulfilling his duties to the dojo, both in and out, to his fullest capabilities.
